Film
Martyna Pekala makes an experimental short film about a video game character who needs to touch grass to get back online. Sounds absurd? It is. Lips Made of Petals blurs the line between digital fake and offline real. Social media apps frame reality as fantasy, and Pekala plays with this critically. The film ends in a tulip field, the perfect Dutch picture, but also a symbol for migration. The tulip isn't native here. Martyna, multimedia artist from Poland based in Rotterdam, fictionalises the effects of social media on your worldview. She uses the camera lens as a mirror to expose the absurdity of virtual hyperconnectivity. Beneath the comical, sometimes overly cute surface, escapist discomfort seeps through.
