Roasting desire under late capitalism

In his practice, Finn Adrian Jorkjen considers the performance situation as a temporary state of social exemption—a space where tension arises and expectations become malleable. Jorkjenvappropriates forms of presentation from popular culture, such as TED Talks, game shows, andvinstructional videos. It’s like placing fake birds in a forest: the form relates to its environment but may evoke confusion or unease.

Like a stand-up comedian, he uses language to generate affect, using humour to access the personal and to explore the tensions that live in my body—topics like mimetic desire, late-stage capitalism, and the misunderstandings produced by racialization. Jorkjen uses the art space as a platform for self-examination, hoping that someone watching might feel seen—or lovingly called out.

Finn Adrian Jorkjen is a Norwegian visual artist and performer based in Oslo. He received an MFA from Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) in 2020 and BFA from the Academy of Fine Art in Trondheim (NTNU) in 2015. His artistic practice explores questions about identity, modes of desire, and how digital spaces affect bodies. Jorkjen writes scripts, stages situations and his works are often humorous and driven by highly ambivalent feelings. He is also part of the performance duo "Koppen & Jorkjen". His work has been presented at Kunstsiloen, Hamar Performance Festival, Heimdal Kunstforening, Ravnedans, and at Høstutstillingen 2022, where he received the Norwegian Art Societies’ Debutant Prize for his performance Hvordan det går (How It Goes), and was nominated for the Sparebanken Sør Art Prize 2024.

Part of Relationscapes: Encounters at de Vishal

Relationscapes: Encounters is an exhibition featuring six international performance artists reflecting on the theme of borders. Borders are contradictory; they protect and exclude, they reveal and conceal, they are physical and psychological, visible and invisible. Relationscapes: Encounters explores both the porosity and fluidity of these borders. A variety of themes such as chronic online presence, war trauma, power structures versus non-hierarchical systems and liminal beings are being investigated. The exhibition features installations, video, and live performances by Finn Adrian Jorkjen, Toni Brell, Karolina Rupp, Maja Zećo, Greig Burgoyne and Lola Bezemer.
